On approach to target, we were lit up by German searchlights. This attracted enemy fight which was damaged by defensive gunfire from Sgt. Evans, MU gunner. We were also hit by flak, which rendered tail turret inoperable. Even with the above, Sgt. Wilson put our bombs on target, scoring at least 30% on target.
Flight home found us engaging several enemy nightfighters, one of which severly wounded Sgt. Browne, our navigator and damaged the starboard wing before we drove him away with our own defensive gunfire … he appeared to have an engine burning as he departed. The second Jerry hit us hard, taking out the mid-upper position heat and my oxygen. However, on his next pass, Sgt. Wilson send him down in flames. I dropped us to about 1500m and got us home with no further incidents. In surgery, Sgt. Browne died of his wounds.
