Our first attacker was an 88 that we spotted trying to line up his shragemusik. We got him on his second run but only after he'd taken out our mid upper turret, damaged control lines and O2 bottles and wrecked the port elevator.
Our second two zones later and 10,000 feet lower caught us totally on the hop and perforated us properly. Nose turret out, cockpit heat out, intercom out, #1 engine out I took the decision that we had no realistic chance of making the target and hitting it.
We pulled out of the bomber stream and home for an early bath. Thankfully we encountered no further night fighters, otherwise we would have been toast.
