Things went along quietly enough until over the North Sea north of Holland when Sgt Jones reported what looked to be a JU 88 coming up on Country Lass' tail. Paul opened fire but missed as I threw the old girl into a series of jinks in an effort to shake the Tame Boar. Jerry was good, managing to hit Country Lass despite her wild antics. While most of the damage was superficial, there was noticeable damage to the port wing root and Sgt Jones reported the tail turret inoperable. When Jerry came around for a second go, Sgt Downs in the mid-upper turret chased him off. The JU 88's Port engine appeared to be on fire.
The skies over Kiel were cloudy, helping prevent Jerry from finding Country Lass; neither Tame Boar, Searchlights, Ack-Ack, nor Wild Boar found us. F/Sgt Smythe is to be commended. Despite the overcast he found the target, delivering at least 40% of bombs on target. Though the tail turret was out of action, Sgt Jones' eyes were not; Paul spotting an Me 110 in time for Country Lass to take evasive action. While Country Lass was unsuccessful in hitting the Tame Boar, Jerry was equally ineffective.
The trip back was uneventful with Country Lass setting down perfectly at Lincoln. Country Lass will be patched up and ready to fly again tomorrow.
Respectfully submitted,
F/O Reginald Pope, Commanding
Country Lass
