M-Matilda Mission 113 AAR : Kiel

No problems on outbound route. Jerry found us with his spotlights again as we approached the target area but flak was relatively light this time. One heartstopping moment when a 109 roared in from 3 o'clock and put a stream of bullets through the bomb bay before we had dropped — there was a fair amount of foul language coming from the flight engineer when he realised what had happened not less than three feet under his backside! Fortunately on his next pass Ted Agnew in the top turret gave the 109 a burst and sent him packing. Lots of cloud cover over the target however TI were spot on and as a result we got 30% of bombs on target. On the way out we had a run-in with a Jerry nightfighter — after peppering us a few times he lost us in the clouds.

A quiet ride home and an easy landing.

Respectfully,
