PM017, sergeant C. Oscar, navigator, reporting. I'm here 'cos the skipper got killed by a Me-110 in vertical climb over the Dutch coast. Bomb aimer B. Upton took over the controls after we had moved Mankiewicz out of the way. When we arrived in the target zone, I moved into the pilot's chair, while Upton resumed his bomb aimer duties. Just as we released the ordnance, we were hit by multiple bursts on flak, seriously wounding Upton. By the grace of God, we made it back without further encounters, and thanx to the lads in flight control, I was able to make a decent hash of the landing.
