In a real 'Pea Souper' we headed out on our second mission with 314 Squadron, the heavy cloud cover giving us a false sense of security.
However, before approaching the German coast we were given a rude awakening as a night fighter attacked without any warning. Luckily the German pilot had misjudged his approach speed and overshot us without causing any damage. Minutes later as he repositioned himself for another attack he was spotted by our Tail gunner, D.Vale, who opened up with everything he had and seconds later the JU-88 exploded in a blinding flash. Two claims in as many missions now for him.
Weather conditions had not improved as we approached Bremen but a lack of flak and enemy fighters over target allowed us to concentrate on our bomb run with an estimated 40% on target.
