As we entered the first enemy Kammhuber defence box we got picked up and shot up by a Ju88 we saw just too late to do anything about. On his second pass our navigator was knocked out by flying kit during evasive action and the flight engineer caught a lump of instrument panel.
With little chance of finding the target and the weather getting worse with every mile Eastward I took the decision to abort and put down on the first runway we found.
