Our first trip to Germany, new crew, new plane and it was nothing like we had expected or trained for.
We didn't expect a daytime opp. We certainly didn't expect three Me110s to carve through the formation and set upon us. One was driven off but the other two destroyed both the mid upper guns and the bombsight. Sgt Lee our bomb aimer hadn't really trained for that, but as we were over the target by that stage we bombed anyway with no real hope of success.
Homebound was calmer with the escorting fighters doing all the hard work.
Safe landing and we're good to go again.
