Our escorts did a superb job — not an enemy fighter came near us. If only they could do something about the flak. A couple bursts damaged Ayres' oxygen in the mid-upper turret, the structure of the starboard wing, the starboard rudder, and our raft. Despite the buffeting, Yanacek held us on target. Not a bad start for us.
