PM019, Flight Engineer D. Pelton reporting. I'm the only old hand from the old crew — on my 23rd mission, in fact — so I wanted to let you know the new lads acquitted themselves well, despite trying circumstances. We cruised unobserved to the target zone, then got lit up by serachlights and could not shake them. We were hit by two flak bursts, wounding our rear gunner, G. Yankton. Then a Wild Boar had a go at us. Despite lining up for our bombing run, the aimer, B. Vance popped him, and our rear gunner shot him down as he passed under us. Missed the target though. After turning for home, a Tame Boar surprised us from the rear, taking out the starboard wing flap. We thought we were home free, but a Tame Boar must have been following us, as he actually attacked us after we had passed back over the Dutch coast. Lesson learned: The match is not in the bag until the referee blows his whistle. (149 Peckham Points)
