Lucky Louise lived up to her name on the outbound flight. No fighters at all appeared to interfere with our progress.
The searchlights & flak also stayed away and we managed a good run on the sky markers.
Turning for home a Ju88 surprised us. Sgt Bell in the mid upper turret scored some hits and the Jerry put some stray shells into our starboard wing. Neither event proved decisive.
Later on our tail gunner Sgt Campbell spotted a Me110 and managed some hits on him, again with no real effect. Before departing the 110 shredded our rafts and started a fuel leak in the starboard inner fuel tank. We were over the German coast at this stage and Sgt Bailey's calculations showed that we should make England if the leak didn't get any worse.
The last few hours of the flight passed uneventfully and we did indeed make England although we put down at a strip some 50 miles short of base.
All good to go again.
