As we neared the enemy coastline, we were hit hard by enemy Ju88; lost one engine, holed petrol tank, hit rudder, port tail plane root and put several other holes in us. Fortunately, no one was hit. Sgt. Ainstay quickly calculated rate of petrol loss and reported to me that if we continued to target, even with an engine out, we would have to ditch in sea. I opted to abort this mission and return to base.
Landed safely on fumes. Wombat should be prepared for her next mission.
