The defences were active en route, over and homeward from the target. We encountered a number of fighters on all parts of the route, two of which are claimed as damaged. In return the air bomber was wounded, we lost the port outer engine, suffered a fuel leak in number four tank, lost the heating system, and suffered a number of other less consequential holes. Despite this and accurate flak and searchlights over the target, we put the bomb load down on the markers. Because of the fuel loss, we landed at Evere airfield at Brussels, where we found both the tail wheel and starboard main tyre had been punctured. Under the circumstances the landing was reasonable, but the aircraft will have to be left behind for repair.
