It all went wrong early on whilst we were still over the North Sea.
A Ju88 got in underneath us without being spotted. The first thing we saw was the tracer rounds coming past and continuing upwards. None of these seemed to hit us but during two more passes we took hits to the wing and tailplane. The port inner engine was hit and started to runaway before we managed to feather the prop.
At that point, still short of the enemy coast I took the decision to turn for home.
