We were hit hard by several enemy night fighters. The first one, as we neared the coastline, caused our #3 engine to runaway. I was able to feather the engine, and continue the mission. On his second run at us, we hit the enemy night fighter, apparently damaging it enough that he went away.
We had no other encounters with enemy aircraft until we began approach to target. Another Bf110 surprised us, taking out #2 engine, the mid-upper gun turret and the tail turret. With only two operational engines, I ordered bombs to be dropped as we descended to an altitude of about 2500m. We were not hit by flak, searchlights or other enemy night fighters as we made our way slowly home.
Maintenance personnel report the Lancaster bomber LYNX should be repaired in time for the next mission.
