Approaching the German coast, shells from an unseen enemy slammed into our starboard wing. The #4 engine burst into flames. I jettisoned our load to take evasive action, while Vaughn triggered the extinguisher. Butterfield spotted a Me-110 as I twisted Toils and Snares around the sky, and with some accurate fire, drove it off.
There was nothing to do but turn for home.
