Reports received indicate that Lismore Lass survived assault by three Fw190 on the way to the target only to have an 88mm flak shell burst in the port wing. Luckily three crew were able to escape the plunging aircraft — Ralph Penfold, Frank O'Connor and Bert Matthew — but they were quickly captured. The other four crew — Pilot James Morgan, Radio Operator Vince Phillips, Mid-upper Gunner Thomas Barton and Tail Gunner Andrew Bailey were reported as killed in the crash.
