Mission 144 Debriefing
Target: Lützkendorf
Our mission to the oil refineries of Lützkendorf was a serious disappointment. We took off on schedule, and made our way into the stream without incident. We crossed into Germany, and for a change, there was no sign of the enemy. This was not the blessing it seemed to be as an ME 110 came up under our port wing and knocked out our number 2 engine. We had no idea he was there until the engine burst into flames. I quickly initiated evasive manoeuvres. Jerry came around for two more passes. Fire was exchanged but no further hits were scored by either side. As we had a distance to go to reach the target (two more zones), I decided to abort. The return flight was nerve-wracking, but uneventful. We landed safely and repairs are expected to be completed in time for the next mission.
