Soon after entering Germany Sgt Atkins in the tail blew apart a Ju88 with his very first burst.
Over the target a Me110 was able to sneak up and spray the tail and wings with cannon fire, eventually knocking out the starboard elevator.
This didn't prevent us bombing successfully with a clean release over the markers.
Homebound three enemy aircraft attacked us, one was driven off by Sgt Atkins and although there were multiple hits all over the airframe, nothing was going to prevent us from returning home.
