We set off with two new lads, F/Sgt Wallace Croft as Engineer and Sgt William Innes in the tail turret. The flight to the target was quiet with no sign of the Hun. As we approached the target it was clear we weren't the first ones on the scene. Fires from previous bombers lit up the harbor below. Fortunately, they also provided sufficient light for William (Sgt Innes) to see a Bf 110 trying to sneak up on our tail. William aimed his four .303s at Jerry and was rewarded with a satisfying fire on the Hun's port engine. The Tame Boar tried to press home his attack, but missed and, with one engine aflame, had to break off the fight. The Ack-Ack was moderate in intensity but one shell burst just under our Starboard wing. While it didn't do any damage to speak of, the concussion gave Pint O' Bitter a bit of a bounce just as Harry (W/O Parks) let go the bombs, causing them to miss the mark an fall harmlessly into the water. Disappointed in our performance, but grateful to be in one piece, I turned for home. We had no further encounters with the Hun and, despite the downpour over Lincoln managed to land without incident. With just a few minor holes in the starboard wing (1 Peckham Point) Pint O' Bitter will be ready to fly again tomorrow, as will I and the lads.
